Saving by Spending

So I need some input from males and females on this one. Today while I was thrift-shopping with my mom's best friend we were discussing my $850 Goldenbleu purse that I bought at Goodwill for $2. She said, "think of all the money you saved... $848." However, saving by spending is an oxymoron in my mind, parallel to doing right through doing wrong, two wrongs making a right... it's all the same to me, hence my reply, "how did I save? I spent two dollars?" Her immediate response was, "you think like a man, Jenny, you saved!"
So, this got me thinking, is this how 95% of the female population thinks, that if you get a coupon in the mail to save $90 when you spend $180, that you are actually saving $90 while spending $90? Apparently mankind tends to focus on the $90 that they saved rather than the $90 that they actually spent on the product. Whereas, "Bob" is planning on getting an item, say a leather coat. He has allotted $180 to spend on the leather coat. Upon arriving at the store he found out the store was running a sale for 50% off the entire store therefore his leather jacket only cost him $90. He walks home with the leather jacket, and $90 in his pocket, meaning he saved $90. Jane gets an email this morning from Express stating "when you spend $180 you get $90 off". Jane hops in her car and runs to Express determined to find $180 worth of merchandise just so she can "save" $90.
Am I making sense? You aren't SAVING money when you find a $850 Goldenbleu purse at Goodwill, you never would have bought it in the first place and you actually spent $2. Do I really "think like a man?"
Not that that's a bad thing... I've been told I shop like a man...

  1. This is funny...the way I would have done that spending spree was if I bought my leather coat for 90 bucks on sale and I had 180 to spend well...then...I would have would have 90 bucks to go thrifting with! No wait, I think I would have thrifted for my leather coat and probably found one for less than 90 leaving me a lot more than 90 bucks to spend on other treasures! Hi, I'm Leslie Hart, I work with your sister Anna Stouffer! She told me that we had a lot in common (thrifters) so I thought I would check out your blog. I'm joining yours so I hope you will find mine interesting enough to join as well. Keep up the great work! Happy Thrifting!!!!! Let's do a trade some time!
